
For most of my life, I thought of stress as something that happened to me.
A difficult day. Too little sleep. A deadline. An illness. A loss. A long stretch of uncertainty.
But the more I learn about the microbiome, the more I think about stress differently.
Stress isn't just an experience happening in the mind. It is a whole-body response—and our microbiome may be one of the participants in the conversation.
A lesson from Hans Selye
Long before we knew what the microbiome was, Hans Selye was trying to understand how the body responds to stress.
In his 1956 book The Stress of Life, Selye described what he called the General Adaptation Syndrome: the body's predictable response to a stressor through three broad stages—alarm, resistance, and exhaustion.
The important idea wasn't that stress is inherently bad. It was that adaptation is necessary for life.
Our bodies are designed to respond to challenges. The problem comes when the challenge doesn't end—or when we experience so many challenges that the systems designed to help us adapt don't have enough opportunity to recover.
That idea feels remarkably relevant to what we're learning about the microbiome today. Because we now know that stress doesn't just affect our brain and hormones. It affects our gut, too.
The gut is listening
The gut and brain are in constant two-way communication through what scientists call the gut-brain axis.
Signals travel through the nervous system, immune system, hormones, and microbial metabolites. The relationship isn't one-directional: the brain influences the gut, while signals originating in the gut can influence the brain.
This helps explain something we've all experienced. You get nervous and your stomach turns. You receive terrible news and suddenly lose your appetite. You're under prolonged stress and your digestion changes.
These aren't separate experiences. They're different expressions of the same interconnected system. And our microbes are part of it.
Stress changes the ecosystem
One of the things I find most fascinating is that stress itself can change the microbial environment in the gut.
Emeran Mayer, a gastroenterologist and neuroscientist who has spent decades studying the brain-gut connection, describes the gut as part of an intricate communication network rather than an isolated digestive organ. His research shows just how extensively the brain, gut, and microbiome interact.
Acute stress can be adaptive. Your body mobilizes resources, your digestion temporarily changes, and your systems prepare you to respond.
But chronic stress is different.
When the stress response stays switched on, those same adaptive mechanisms can become disruptive. Changes in gut function can affect the environment in which our microbes live, while changes in the microbial community may, in turn, influence signaling back to the brain.
It's a feedback loop.
Stress affects the microbiome. The microbiome may affect how we respond to stress.
Enter the psychobiotics
This emerging science is the subject of The Psychobiotic Revolution, written by Scott C. Anderson with microbiome researchers John Cryan and Ted Dinan.
The book explores the fascinating possibility that microbes can influence aspects of mood and behavior through the gut-brain connection.
The word psychobiotic captures an idea that would have sounded almost impossible not long ago: microorganisms in our gut may have an influence on our psychological and emotional lives.
Of course, we need to be thoughtful here. The science is exciting, but it isn't magic. We don't yet understand exactly which microbes, metabolites, or combinations are most important, and much of the mechanistic evidence remains preclinical. Researchers continue to emphasize the need for well-designed human trials.
But the larger idea is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore: our mental and physical health cannot be neatly separated.
Resilience isn't the absence of stress
This brings me back to Selye. Perhaps the goal isn't to create a life without stress. That's impossible. Instead, perhaps we should think more about resilience—our ability to respond to a challenge and then return toward balance.
And perhaps resilience is not just a psychological trait. It is biological. It involves our nervous system, hormones, immune system, metabolism, gut, and microbiome working together.
This is one reason I find the microbiome so fascinating. We aren't simply individuals trying to manage our environment. We are ecosystems responding to an environment.
And that means the way we care for ourselves can also be understood as the way we care for the ecosystem within us.
Creating the conditions for resilience
We don't need to completely eliminate stress. We can, however, create conditions that support our ability to adapt. Eat a diversity of plants and plenty of fiber. Move our bodies. Prioritize sleep and recovery. Spend time outside. Stay connected to other people. And pay attention to the health of our microbial communities.
At BiotiQuest, this is part of what makes the microbiome so compelling to me. The goal isn't simply to introduce more bacteria into the body. It's to think about the microbiome as a living ecosystem and ask what we can do to support its ability to function well.
We are still learning what that looks like. But perhaps the most important shift is simply recognizing that the conversation exists. The brain is talking to the gut. The gut is talking back. And the trillions of microbes living inside us are part of that conversation.
Hans Selye taught us that life requires adaptation. Modern microbiome science is showing us that we don't adapt alone. We adapt as an ecosystem.
