In a compelling episode of The Angel Next Door podcast, microbiome expert and entrepreneur Martha Carlin shares her inspiring journey from accountant to biotech founder, driven by her husband John’s early Parkinson’s diagnosis. Martha’s story is a powerful example of resilience, innovation, and mission-driven entrepreneurship in the health sector.
From Personal Crisis to Scientific Innovation
Martha’s transition began in 2002 when John, a healthy marathon runner, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Motivated to find solutions beyond traditional medicine, she applied her analytical skills from accounting to map out systemic health issues, focusing on the microbiome—the trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses living in and on our bodies that act as an internal pharmacy.
“I went from reading that book [Missing Microbes] to six months later reading the first paper connecting the microbiome to Parkinson’s, to six months later founding a company called the Biolective,” Martha recalls. Over the next decade, she invested her commercial real estate earnings into researching and developing specialized probiotics aimed at improving health outcomes for Parkinson’s patients and others.
The Science Behind BiotiQuest Probiotics
Unlike typical grocery store probiotics, which mostly contain a standard set of about 12 strains from a few suppliers, BiotiQuest’s products are uniquely formulated using computational models that analyze how different bacterial strains work synergistically as a “team” or “factory.” This approach ensures the probiotics produce beneficial molecules like mannitol, butyrate, CoQ10, and melatonin, targeting specific health issues.
For example, the sugar-shift formula was designed to increase mannitol production, a sugar alcohol shown in animal models to reduce protein aggregation linked to Parkinson’s. Martha shares a remarkable personal outcome: “Within a month [John] was able to put his cane away and navigate through crowds again.”
Other products focus on cardiovascular health, immune support, sleep enhancement, and gut restoration after antibiotics. The sleep formula, Simple Slumber, produces melatonin and tryptophan, promoting restful sleep and pleasant dreams.
Challenges of Small Health Businesses in the Digital Age
Martha also highlights the significant hurdles small businesses face in today’s digital marketplace dominated by giants like Amazon, Google, and Meta. These platforms control access to customers through opaque algorithms and policies that can abruptly block accounts or restrict advertising without clear recourse.
She describes Amazon’s “mafia business model,” where competitors can sabotage sellers by posting false reviews, and how her company lost $50,000 due to such tactics. Facebook flagged her son’s account for sharing funeral information, cutting off advertising access for months. Google misclassified one of their products as a pharmaceutical, barring marketplace visibility for over six months.
“These control mechanisms act almost like a quasi-government entity without due process,” Martha explains. “It’s very difficult to get to a human… and they don’t really care about the little guys.”
Looking Ahead: New Products on the Horizon
Despite these challenges, BiotiQuest continues innovating. Martha teases an upcoming product called Perfect Peace, designed to help with mood and anxiety—“perfect timing” for today’s stressful world. Another formula targeting healthy aging and longevity is expected soon, based on decade-by-decade microbiome insights.
Final Thoughts
Martha Carlin’s story is a testament to how personal adversity can fuel groundbreaking innovation. Her scientific rigor, combined with entrepreneurial grit, has created probiotic products that go far beyond what’s available on grocery store shelves, offering hope for improved health outcomes in Parkinson’s and beyond.
For those interested in health, entrepreneurship, or the future of microbiome science, this episode offers valuable insights and inspiration.

With gratitude,
Martha Carlin, is a “Citizen Scientist”,
systems thinker, wife of Parkinson’s warrior, John Carlin, and founder of The BioCollective , a microbiome company expanding
the reach of science and BiotiQuest, the first of it’s kind probiotic line. Since John’s diagnosis in 2002,
Martha began learning the science of agriculture, nutrition, environment, infectious disease, Parkinson’s
pathology and much more. In 2014, when the first research was published showing a connection between the gut
bacteria and the two phenotypes of Parkinson’s, Martha quit her former career as a business turnaround expert
and founded The BioCollective to accelerate the discovery of the impact of gut health on all human disease. Martha was a speaker at the White House 2016 Microbiome Initiative launch, challenging the scientific
community to “think in a broader context”. Her systems thinking background and experience has led to collaborations
across the scientific spectrum from neuroscience to engineering to infectious disease. She is a respected out of the
box problem solver in the microbiome field and brings a unique perspective to helping others understand the
connections from the soil to the food to our guts and our brains.
