#137: Documenting the Parkinson's Journey: A Call to Action - The Secret Life of Parkinson's

Martha Carlin | Apr 03, 2025 | podcast

In a compelling episode of The Secret Life of Parkinson’s podcast (#137), microbiome expert Martha Carlin teams up with Lisa, a young-onset Parkinson’s disease (YOPD) patient and President of Resolving Parkinson’s, to discuss an inspiring documentary project and a groundbreaking approach to Parkinson’s care.

The Power of Patient Voices

Martha and Lisa emphasize the critical importance of centering the lived experiences of people with Parkinson’s in research and treatment. As Martha puts it, “If we’re going to solve this very complicated problem that is Parkinson’s, the voice of the patient and the lived experience has to be louder.” Lisa echoes this sentiment, sharing how many patients feel unheard in brief clinical visits and how sharing stories creates a sense of community and relief. “Every single conversation we’ve had has ended almost with an emotional thank you for listening to me, for hearing my story,” she says.

A New Paradigm for Parkinson’s Care

The conversation highlights the need to move beyond traditional medication-focused treatments. Martha, who has been deeply involved in microbiome research for Parkinson’s, points out that “stress as a trigger is a huge piece of the puzzle that is never discussed.” She stresses the importance of a holistic approach that includes stress management, gut health, physical therapy, and emotional support. This aligns with emerging science that connects gut health and the glycocalyx—a critical cellular interface—to brain health and Parkinson’s progression.

Stripping the Canvas Bare: A Scientific Reboot

Martha and her collaborators are organizing a unique conference titled Stripping the Canvas Bare: A New Synthesis in Parkinson’s Research. This event aims to challenge outdated scientific foundations and bring together about 22 invited scientists and physicians from around the world, alongside Parkinson’s patients, to rethink the disease from the ground up. Martha describes the current state of Parkinson’s research as “a canvas layered with theories, treatments, and fleeting breakthroughs, but beneath it all, the original image is lost.” The goal is to dismantle and rebuild the scientific framework with a holistic, interdisciplinary perspective.

The Documentary Project: Sharing Stories to Inspire Change

The documentary initiative is designed to capture and share authentic patient stories, providing researchers and clinicians with a deeper understanding of daily life with Parkinson’s. Lisa explains, “We want people to come to the table feeling excited to share something new and innovative with us.” The project also serves as a platform for patients to feel heard and connected, which is often missing in traditional care settings.

Innovative Patient-Led Research

The episode also touches on inspiring examples of patient-driven innovation, such as Albert Wright, a PhD scientist who developed a homemade antioxidant “broccoli seed tea” that helped alleviate his non-motor symptoms. Martha participated in an N-of-1 study with Albert, highlighting the potential of patient-led experimentation to uncover new therapeutic avenues.

  • “Stress as a trigger is a huge piece of the puzzle that is never discussed.”
  • “We are not here to refine old models; we are here to dismantle and rebuild them.”
  • “Without understanding the glycocalyx, we miss the structure that mediates how gut health translates to brain health.”
  • “There are things you can do to make your day-to-day life better.”

Final Thoughts

This episode is a call to action for the Parkinson’s community to share their stories, advocate for holistic care, and embrace innovative research approaches. Martha and Lisa’s work exemplifies how patient voices can drive meaningful change and inspire a new era of Parkinson’s understanding and treatment.

Since John’s diagnosis in 2002, Martha began learning the science of agriculture, nutrition, environment, infectious disease, Parkinson’s pathology and much more. In 2014, when the first research was published showing a connection between the gut bacteria and the two phenotypes of Parkinson’s, Martha quit her former career as a business turnaround expert and founded The BioCollective to accelerate the discovery of the impact of gut health on all human disease. Martha was a speaker at the White House 2016 Microbiome Initiative launch, challenging the scientific community to “think in a broader context”. Her systems thinking background and experience has led to collaborations across the scientific spectrum from neuroscience to engineering to infectious disease. She is a respected out of the box problem solver in the microbiome field and brings a unique perspective to helping others understand the connections from the soil to the food to our guts and our brains.
